Monsters are people

Or is it people are monsters? I reckon both are or can be true. Quite literally to be honest too. Having said that, the movie lives off the mood it creates .. and with the special and make up effects it is able to really reel in the viewers and their attention. Plus a native myth story of sorts ... and quite a few flawed people. You may not care too much for all of them, but the movie still works, especially because of its beautiful cinematography.

Del Toro did not direct, but he helped as a producer and some may be able to tell. The story spoke to him I guess and it makes sense. Keri Russell is phenomenal, even if sometimes borderline annoying in her quest to work and digest her past in the present ... sometimes helping others can be the wrong thing. Or not entirely the right thing - reasons wise.

More than decent horror with quite a few violent outburts, some flawed CGI effects especially towards the end, but overall engaging story.

Oh deer!

For the first half hour, this isn't that bad. A couple of men stripping an old mine hear some curious noises, next thing we are in a school with a young "Lucas" (Jeremy T. Thomas) seemingly distracted, a little dishevelled and only when his teacher "Julia" (Keri Russell) decides to investigate, do we realise that what came out of that mine was a hell of a lot more rapacious than what went into it... Sadly, though, the rest of it all quickly becomes a bit too routine and the ending though quite well built up, is really a bit too predicable, brief and flat. The "monster" is seriously under-used by director Scott Cooper. A lot is left to our imagination, and to an extent that works - but unfortunately, regular fans of this genre will probably have far gorier fantasies that those we are eventually offered here. It's not a terrible film, it is decently paced and the young "Lucas" holds it together quite well, but sadly it offers very little for us (or the beastie) to get our teeth into.

One of the year's best horror films (and best films period).

ANTLERS (2021) *** 1/2 KERI RUSSELL, JESSE PLEMONS, JEREMY T. THOMAS, GRAHAM GREENE, SCOTT HAZE, RORY COCHRANE, AMY MADIGAN, SAWYER JONES. Effectively creepy horror film centering on a young boy (a truly amazing Thomas) whose family's encounter with a wendigo in the Pacific Nothwest results in a paralyzing grip of fear and intimidation that eventually catches the attention of his new (and equally traumatized) teacher (Russell giving some unexpected gravitas) with some truly harrowing results. Excellent direction by Scott Cooper (who collaborated on the to-the-bone scary screenplay by Henry Chaisson and Nick Antosca - based on his short story 'The Quiet Boy'), eerie atmospheric score by Javier Navarrete and beautifully shot cinematography by Florian Hoffmeister dovetail into a compelling supernatural chiller with some also impressive visual f/x and make-up concoctions. Executive produced by Guillermo del Toro. One of the year's best horror films (and best films period).
