Guide Dog in the Machine

In the near future, many disillusioned people are addicted to virtual reality games. Sexy cigarette-smoking Malgorzata Foremniak (as Ash) is excellent at the popular war-game "Avalon" and gets paid to play. She attracts new players and wants to increase her difficulty level. A loner in real life, Ms. Foremniak once played with a team. She turned solo when her Jerzy Gudejko (as Murphy) and playmates broke up under mysterious circumstances. Their fate is an obsession, along with a strange player who begins to stalk our heroine at play. The game is illegal and strangely not much fun, but the cinematography by Grzegorz Kedzierski is very nice. It might have been more effective to vary the tones a little more between realities, although perhaps "Avalon" does. The film is presented in sepia-like fashion until late in the game, which may mean absolutely nothing...

Beautiful images are sucked dry by a story with a cypher at its center

Just saw Mamoru Oshii's AVALON. Its a live action film made in Polish with a Polish cast by a crew of Japanese film makers.

Its about a virtual reality war game that some people play for money, and which causes some people to become vegetables when they never leave.

Its a beautiful film that is pure eye candy of the post industrial sort. I love every frame of this film's images.

As a movie its so painfully slow and uninviting as to be almost unbearable.

The trouble is that Ash, the central character, is so strong silent and introspective as to be a black hole. Only when real people interact with her is there any sense of life in the film.

I am shocked that the man who made such wonderful character driven anime such as the PATLABOR films, GHOST IN THE SHELL can make such a dud as this when it comes to a central character. JIN ROH an animated film he wrote and is a cousin to this film in some ways has a heart and soul that is missing from this movie.

The film is not badly made- far from it its very well directed except that Ash is missing as anything other than an object to be moved around the screen. I can't believe her part was written or conceived in any way at all simply because its nothing more than a place holder. Sequences simply fail to work on any real level since Ash is such a life sucking force that anything good gets stretched in order to cover the hole in the center.

If you can see this for free or cheap give it a try but other wise....

PS Find the score on CD since its awesome. Its the perfect match to the visuals.

Well done movie about a game that no one built yet

Foreword: when you hear people talking in Polish in the movie it is not because you got a ripped version dubbed in Polish, the movie is a Japanese/Polish co-production.

This film is reminiscent of Matrix and Cashern, but only on the outside. The movie starts as a depiction of some future World of Warcraft, where one's real life is inside the game, not outside it. For someone that hasn't played a massive multi-player game yet or at least a dungeons and dragons game, the beginning won't make much sense.

After a whole movie about people having Classes and playing in Parties and Completing Missions, you get to a disappointing end. I think that the music, graphics and the general atmosphere make it an interesting and watchable movie, but the script lacks substance.
