Captain Phillips is based on true events, and not something I would normally watch. Tom Hanks always seems to deliver, and his performance in this is not only gripping but makes you believe in the character he is portraying. The film leaves you on edge throughout and Hanks leads the film throughout, with great support from others. The pirates in particular show great technique and skill in trying to make you believe what it would have been line to be in this situation.
Only downfall in the plot, was you knew what was coming and it seemed to take some time to get there, but nothing else that you can really critique here.

Synopsis
Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is - through director Paul Greengrass's distinctive lens - simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips' unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.

Better than ever Hanks is amazing
A slick thriller but not enough of a story to support a plot.
The problem with basing a film on a true story is that the true story needs to be of sufficient interest. Any story that can be adequately summarised in one sentence - "A ship is hijacked and the Captain taken prisoner but is then rescued by the US Navy" is not going to be a great film.
That said, Hanks is excellent as always and the actors playing the Somalian hijackers are also very good. The film is well=paced and there is sufficient level of tension to keep the viewer's interest. B
Ultimately, however, the film leaves a feeling of "Is that it?" The final scene in which a shaken Hanks receives a medical is bizarre - and seems like a jarringly self-indulgent last plea for an Oscar! "Hey Academy! Look at my great acting!"
A must-watch
Captain Phillips based on a true story is a very edge of your seat thriller. The directing and performances are brilliant, the scenery is different, and the catchy film score suits the movie.
Apparently the real Captain Phillips was difficult to get along with, and apparently his crew couldn't stand him due to him apparently putting them in danger and ignoring warnings about the pirates. It's scary that the hijack was real, but the Hollywood depiction is just like every Hollywood movie based on real events - there will always be a lot of falseness added in a depiction to make it look more interesting.
If you still haven't seen this film, i must warn you that there is a lot of shouting and screaming.
Captain Phillips shows viewers the length that people will go to based on greed.
