When you wish upon a Christmas star

2019 was a very mixed year for Hallmark when it came to their Christmas output, most being in the average and less bracket. There were winners such as 'Two Turtle Doves', 'The Christmas Club' and 'Holiday Hearts'. There were also misfires like 'A Cheerful Christmas', 'Christmas Scavenger Hunt' and 'Christmas at Dollywood'. The premise for 'Christmas Under the Stars' sounded very charming and seeing it positively reviewed by some that can be critical of Hallmark's Christmas offerings added to the intrigue.

'Christmas Under the Stars' in my mind deserves the praise it's garnered here. It more than lives up to the promise it had and manages to do something refreshing with a premise that was already relatively different for Hallmark's Christmas films, well certainly from that particular year. As far as their 2019 Christmas output goes, it is a very strong contender for the best. If anybody was turned off from seeing more of the output after 'A Merry Christmas Match', 'Christmas Under the Stars' and 'The Christmas Club' are the strongest examples of why the 2019 Christmas output shouldn't be immediately dismissed.

My only major issue actually with 'Christmas Under the Stars' is the ending. Do agree with it being rushed and abrupt as well as forced in and too neat, it was a shame that after the rest of the film making for one of the more realistic and honest films that Hallmark have done in recent years it would ring false in the final 10-15 minutes or so.

However, there is a lot that is great. The production values still manage to be pleasing. It's not too drab or garish in photography, the editing didn't seem rushed or disorganised and the scenery has a real charm to it. The music is pleasantly nostalgic and is not over-used or constant, the latter of which is the case with a lot of Hallmark Christmas films. The direction is accommodating without going too far in that it becomes pedestrian instead.

Furthermore, the script quality is better than most 2019 Hallmark Christmas films, where a vast majority were either all the way through cheesy and stilted or a case of starting off very ropey and then got better. The script here is playful and heart-warming and the flow isn't awkward. The story is light-hearted and really warms the heart without going into over-saccharine territory, and doesn't follow the more of the same formula seen in the vast majority of Hallmark's films. The portrayal of the community and its close spirit was so engaging and refreshing, giving the film a lot of its heart.

Characters were easy to get behind and carry the film well, one of the few 2019 Hallmark Christmas films where both lead characters were worth caring for. Jesse Metcalfe and Autumn Reeser are both immensely engaging leads and both give some of their best work of all their Hallmark offerings. Their chemistry is very natural and genuine, developing realistically and it's not underused at all. Absolutely agree with the praise for Clarke Peters, who gets the acting honours and brings a lot of heart to the film.

Summing up, very well done. 8/10.

Not done before scenario for a change

Liked the cast together. Jesse Metcalf and Autumn Reeser make a compatible looking couple looks wise. She isn't silly looking like some.

The story starts off a bit more interesting than usual. He's been laid off from an investment firm. At least the story doesn't have a completely done to death set up. What's irritating is that she's angry with him for working in finance even though he isn't responsible for her troubles. Unreasonable for sure. Good thing he doesn't have to sacrifice his career for love for a change.

Good Enough

Though the premisses of the story were nice and there were some touching moments and fmaily dynamics, there were some scenes that were just ridiculous. Like the one when the leading lady got mad with the male lead for no reason. But the tree merchant story was nice.
